History of Innovation, Quality and Service.
1971 U-C Coatings began as Upson Chemical Company when Gerard E. “Red” Murray acquired two companies, Upson Chemical and Bates Industries. As a two person operation, the company provided products for the xerographic and photographic paper industries as well as specialty release coatings for other industries.
1976 Red’s son, Norman Murray, joined his parents in the operation of their small but growing family business.
1978 Research and development began on an innovative wax emulsion for sealing the end grain of hardwood logs and lumber to reduce end checking. This new product was tested extensively to find the best technology for creating a quality moisture barrier to provide the highest possible protection for freshly sawn logs and lumber.
1980 ANCHORSEAL®, our wax emulsion sealer, was introduced to the hardwood industry and has driven the growth of our company for over 35 years.
1984 As the products of the company changed from paper processing chemicals to wood coatings, the company name was changed to U-C Coatings Corporation.
1985 The product line of wood end coating products was expanded with the development of GEMPAINT®, a branding paint for logos and ends of dried lumber bundles.
1986 Norm Murray became President of the growing company while founder Red Murray moved to a consulting, semi-retired role.
1987 Tom Johel was hired as the company’s first sales representative to help introduce the growing product line to the US hardwood industry.
1992 LogSavers®, an innovative plastic alternative to steel S-Irons was added to our product line. FlitchSavers®, the smaller version of these plastic staples, was developed and introduced eight years later.
1996 GEMPAINT*PLUS®, a premium end paint for lumber bundles, was developed for uniform presentation of all species – even porous hardwoods.
1998 Tom Johel assumed General Manager duties for sales and production of the growing company.
1999 Tom Johel was promoted to President of U-C Coatings, while Norm Murray continued to guide the company as CEO.
2001 The UCC facility was re-designed and expanded to complement our growing business which is dedicated to helping our customers conserve and protect valuable hardwood logs and lumber.
2006 BATES HTR-1® & HTR-4® were added to our glue release product line. We now offer our standard BATES BC® Boothcoating Glue Release plus the new high temperature, high performance release products.
2008 Shade-Dri®, a mesh shade fabric used to protect logs and lumber from the elements, was added to the product line.
2009 Research and development for a sealer made with green technology was finalized. ANCHORSEAL 2®, a hybrid of wax and natural polymers, was introduced.
2013 Sidereal Capital Group partnered with Argosy Private Equity to acquire the company from the Murray family. This new ownership provides the strategic investment and technical assistance necessary to support U-C Coatings’ continued growth.
