    U-C Coatings began as Upson Chemical Company when Gerard E. “Red” Murray acquired two companies, Upson Chemical and Bates Industries. In its early years, the company provided products for the xerographic and photographic paper industries, as well as specialty release coatings for other industries.

    Red’s son, Norman Murray, joins his parents in the operation of the small but growing family business.

    1978

    Research and development begins on an innovative sealer for the end grain of hardwood logs and lumber to reduce end checking. Extensive testing is conducted to ensure the highest quality moisture barrier is developed to provide the best protection for freshly sawn logs and lumber.

    ANCHORSEAL®, our wax emulsion end sealer, is introduced to the hardwood industry, driving the growth of U-C Coatings for more than 35 years.

    1984

    The company name changes from Upson Chemical Company to U-C Coatings Corporation as the company focus shifts from paper processing chemicals to wood coatings.

    1985

    GEMPAINT® is developed and introduced, specifically for branding the ends of dried lumber bundles, expanding the U-C Coatings product line.

    Norm Murray becomes President of the growing company while founder Red Murray moves to a semi-retired/consulting role.

    Tom Johel is hired as the company’s first sales representative to help expand the growing product line within the US hardwood industry.

    LogSavers®, an innovative plastic alternative to steel S-Irons is added to the product line.

    GEMPAINT*PLUS, a premium end paint for lumber bundles, is developed for uniform presentation of a company’s brand on all species, even porous hardwoods.

    Tom Johel assumes General Manager duties for sales and production of the growing company.

    1999

    Tom Johel is promoted to President of U-C Coatings, while Norm Murray continues to guide the company as CEO.

    FlitchSavers®, the smaller version of LogSavers®, are developed and introduced to the US hardwood industry.

    The U-C Coatings facility is expanded and remodeled to complement the growing business, which is dedicated to helping customers conserve and protect valuable hardwood logs and lumber.

    2006

    BATES® HTR-1 & HTR-4 are developed and added to our glue release product line. HTR-1 and HTR-4 are designed for use in high temperature settings and with high performance adhesives.

    Shade-Dri®, a durable mesh fabric used to protect logs and lumber from the elements, is added to the product line.

    After extensive research and development, an eco-friendly version of our wax emulsion end sealer is finalized. ANCHORSEAL® 2, a hybrid of wax and natural polymers, is introduced to the hardwood industry.

    Sidereal Capital Group partners with Argosy Private Equity to acquire U-C Coatings from the Murray family. This new ownership provides the strategic investment and technical assistance necessary to support the company’s continued growth.

    Alvaro Orozco is hired as the Director of International Sales to provide sales support to our growing International customer base.

    International distributor relationships are established in Germany, Guatemala and Peru.

    • An International distributor relationship is established in Malaysia.
    • U-C Coatings expands its product line with the development and introduction of LogDawg® steel plates for protection against end splits and checks in valuable logs.
    • U-C Coatings acquires the SEAL-ONCE® product line from New Image Coatings, LLC. SEAL-ONCE® is a complete line of eco-friendly, water-based, waterproofing products for wood, concrete and masonry in the Building and Home Improvement Industries. Applications include wood siding, decks, fencing, railings, driveways, docks & log homes.
    • Manufacturing operations for SEAL-ONCE® are transitioned to U-C Coatings’ headquarters in Buffalo, NY

    • An International distributor relationship is established in Korea.
    • Our Chinese distributor, IWG, expands operations into Vietnam.
    • LogSavers® are redesigned and reintroduced, offering stronger and more durable protection against end splits in valuable logs and lumber.

    • U-C Coatings, LLC is acquired by High Road Capital Partners.
    • U-C Coatings acquires Contechem, a Portland, OR-based manufacturer of BRITEWOOD® sapstain control and SOL-BRITE™ iron stain control products.

    Tom Johel retires after 32 years with U-C Coatings. Eric Degenfelder joins the team as CEO.
