For decades, ABATRON wood restoration products have been used by thousands of customers for innumerable projects. We’ve heard the stories and seen the pictures of restorations and repairs on everything from common household fixes to complex restorations on buildings predating the industrial revolution. Through Instagram, we’ve become acquainted with a talented craftsman who has shared many of his projects in southwest Ontario. Allow us to introduce you to Aaron of Woody’s Painting.
Aaron’s construction career started fresh out of high school, first
painting, then framing new homes. His manager allowed him to do all the painting as well, which Aaron had a preference for. There he developed his skills in painting, drywall, mudding, and finish carpentry. Over time though, he became frustrated as his employer clung to outdated methods and products when Aaron had begun identifying better solutions.
Things changed for Aaron in 2017. During a winter layoff period, he was offered some work on a large kitchen project and there was no looking back. Aaron started off on his own.
The first two and a half years on his own were spent learning; discovering which products were best for what applications, and how to use them most effectively. He went into century homes to get an understanding of woodworking and restoration. He also researched and networked with other painters and contractors, all to improve what he could offer to his clients.
“As a painter, you’re supposed to know more than just paint. You’re supposed to know restoration, drywall, basic repair skills.”
During this time Aaron was introduced to ABATRON LiquidWood® and WoodEpox®. Canadian winters are harsh, and Woody required a product that wouldn’t shrink, crack, or fall out when exposed to the elements.
“When I first started using it, it was mix and fill. But then I started to experiment with different application processes. A big change was when I abandoned the trowel and started using my hands to sculpt and profile.”
Aaron’s work now includes all kinds of restorations. He enjoys the variety, the challenge of matching different textures and materials while also keeping the projects within the budget of his clients. He enjoys the variety naturally associated with restoration, often incorporating LiquidWood® and WoodEpox® to stabilize and restore everything from dry rot to millwork and more. Although Aaron has developed serious restoration skills, his first love is still traditional painting.
“So long as you’ve got something to listen to painting is an absolute joy. I could paint for hours and not even care.”
