Ten months ago, the Eco Chemical™ team gained an invaluable member: chemist Johnte Meagher. After studying General Science and Chemistry at Oregon State University, Johnte worked for Forrest Technical Coatings and then for Akzo Nobel, the largest producer of paints and specialty chemicals in the world, formulating water-based interior wood finishes for ambient and radiation cure applications. Now, at Eco, Johnte is responsible for researching and developing both new and existing commercial coating products as well as wood stains.
This week, we had the opportunity to catch up with Johnte and get to know a little bit more about him and his passion for the industry:
What do you enjoy most about your position at Eco Chemical?
I enjoy solving complex problems through research and experimentation. Using my independent judgement and interpretation, I get to apply scientific principles to accomplish design and product developments. It’s been a challenging and rewarding job. Having a great team here at Eco does make coming to work every day enjoyable, too.
What are you looking forward to in 2016?
I’m excited to see more novel ideas and technology shifts take place within the coating industry. Here at Eco, I’m excited to launch some unique technologies that will not only be some of the most environmentally-friendly and sustainable products on the market, but will be performance-driven to function just as well as more traditional petroleum-based products. There will be a lot of innovation this year in anti-microbial, self-healing and self-cleaning, as well as super-hydrophobic functional coatings. Ideas that were thought to have been impossible decades ago are starting to make significant advances.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy being outside – camping, kayaking, fishing, and snowboarding during the winter time. Basketball is a year-round activity that I would play every day if my body allowed it. I also enjoy spending time with my fiance, Alexa and my dog, Layla.
